Essential skills to gain more work with Blaze Staffing.

Working in food processing, packing and warehousing offers reliable work opportunities in the current market, but to make the most of them, it’s important to invest in your skills, workplace behaviour, and personal wellbeing and safety. This is the essential guide to ensuring you gain more shifts, stay safe, and build a reliable and trustworthy reputation with consultants.

Getting More Work

  • Answer your phone. This seems like a simple one. If you are looking for work or more shifts we have to be able to contact you. We often experience people not answering or checking messages and unfortunately it’s these people that miss out on shifts. If you would like to work more we require more contact and confirmation. Pick up our calls, return our messages and this will be a great start.
  • Arrive early and prepared for every shift. Being consistently on time and ready to work makes a big impression on supervisors and often leads to repeat work. Ensure if there is an induction on site, you pay attention, ask questions and even write notes if needed.

  • Understanding ‘On Call’ – Agreeing to be added to the ‘on call’ roster means that you have agreed that you will be ready to work at short notice. It means that you need to answer calls, be prepared and expect that call that rosters you on. If you repeatedly fail to work when asked and you are on the ‘On Call’ roster the consultants won’t be able to offer you as much work. If you are unclear about this process speak to your consultant.

  • Take on extra shifts if they’re available or if they are offered and let Blaze Staffing know your availability in well in advance.

  • Be as flexible as possible – Flexibility with casual work is key. Try to ensure that you can take on shifts, arrange your personal life so that more shifts are possible and communicate your flexibility often.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, as small errors can affect food quality, safety, and production schedules and others – employers value workers they can trust to get it right every time.

  • Be prepared – If you have questions or are unsure about what time you start or finish, timesheets or pay our support line is available 24/7 – Call 1300 008 005. In addition prepare all the equipment, clothing, boots etc ready for work in advance.

  • Show a willingness to learn and ask questions when needed; this demonstrates initiative and real commitment to quality.

Staying Safe

  • Always wear your required PPE (hairnets, gloves, aprons, and non-slip shoes/boots etc). This protects you and helps maintain food/workplace safety standards.

  • Keep your workspace area clean and follow strict hygiene protocols: frequent hand washing, sanitising equipment, and never bypassing safety barriers.

  • Attend all safety and equipment training sessions-even if some things seem repetitive, refreshers help prevent incidents.

  • Report hazards, injuries, or unusual equipment noises immediately to your supervisor/manager to ensure a safe environment for you and your teammates.

  • If you are unsure – ASK and speak to a manager or call Blaze Staffing who will guide you.

Building Reliability and Reputation

  • Always complete the full shift and avoid requesting early leave unless in an absolute emergency; reliability is key to getting more shifts and ensuring more work.

  • Do your best not to cancel a shift once it has been assigned to you. Try to plan ahead any commitments or appointments so that your shifts are not impacted. If you have a change in your availability jump online and update your status so the consultants know.
  • Help others finish up and clean your station at the end of your workday. Be a team player, people notice.

  • Pay attention to supervisors’ instructions and follow all protocols or recipes precisely-this shows respect for standards and team workflow. Prove that you are an asset and this can lead to more work or even a permanent position. Your work will be noticed.

Mastering Essential Skills

  • Develop strong operation skills. Familiarise yourself with equipment such as mixers, slicers, packaging lines, and other equipment specific to the facilities where you work. Make sure you are comfortable and understand how things work before you start your shift.

  • Practise strong quality control-learn what a defect looks like in finished products and how to follow quality checklists and guidelines.

  • Understand HACCP and food safety certifications if you are working in a food packing environment. If you don’t already have training, ask for more information if needed.

  • If you have additional qualifications since working with Blaze Staffing, you can send through an updated CV at any time, this may lead to other roles and opportunities if your skills have advanced.

Shift Work and Self-Care Tips

  • Prepare for shift work by getting adequate sleep before starting, and maintain a regular sleep routine when possible.

  • Set double alarms – If you are not used to waking at a certain time or have trouble getting up early enough to make your shift, set two alarms so that you don’t miss the timing. Do what you need to do to be your best.

  • Plan healthy meals and snacks. Packing high-protein, slow-release energy foods can help maintain focus and avoid energy crashes on long or late shifts.

  • Stay hydrated and be cautious with caffeine-avoid it during the last six hours before sleep so it doesn’t affect your rest.

  • Do not take breaks longer than scheduled, ensure you are prepared to return back to your shift after lunch.

  • Fit in some movement or stretching before or after shifts to help with circulation if your job involves lots of standing or unusual repetitive movements.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Keep communication open and clear with your working team and supervisors on site, announcing any concerns or questions early so workflows aren’t disrupted. Contact Blaze Staffing if you are not sure about anything at the worksite.

  • Accept your shifts in ‘FoundU’ otherwise Blaze Staffing can not send you work. Ensure you are checking your ‘FoundU’ roster. Clock in and clock out on the premises using provided equipment/devices. Do not leave and try to clock out later.

  • Be honest if you need help or don’t know a procedure, strong teams solve problems together, which boosts overall productivity.

Continuous Learning and Development

  • Ask for feedback and take notes on areas for improvement; this willingness to learn sets you apart as a standout candidate.

  • Keep up to date with industry standards and updates shared by Blaze Staffing.

Those who are reliable, safety-conscious, and proactive about learning are noticed by Blaze Staffing. By focusing on these simple but important actions, you’ll see your opportunities and your shifts grow.
